“I nearly k!lled myself after taking an HIV test publicly and found out i was positive” – Joyce Dzidzor Mensah

Former AIDS Ambassador and actress, Joyce Dzidzor Mensah, recently opened up about a difficult period in her life where she faced suicidal thoughts due to intense criticism for lying about her HIV status.

In June 2021, Joyce took a public HIV test upon returning from Germany to prove her status after previously denying it.

The test confirmed she was HIV-positive, a fact she had previously denied until 2019. Speaking on Onua FM’s Efie Ne Fie, she shared that the public backlash and insults drove her to contemplate suicide.

Initially planning to end her life after the test, she received crucial support from someone in Germany that made her reconsider.

She revealed, “I did that test with the intention that afterwards I was going to commit suicide but I changed my mind because I got help from Germany.”

The person reminded her of her children who needed her, encouraging her to think about the impact her death would have on them.

Mensah acknowledged the importance of her children’s well-being, despite her own struggles.

In 2011, she was appointed as an HIV campaigner by the Ghana AIDS Commission based on her HIV-positive status since 2007.

However, her denial of this status in 2014 led to the termination of her contract and public outcry.

Her decision to take the public test in 2021 stemmed from her inability to cope with the ongoing criticism.
